WE Rock, Event 1: Globe, AZ: 2005
This was an excellent event! We had to contend with pore weather on
Saturday. We had the pleasure of witnessing a river running down
between half of the courses for the weekend. This posed an interesting
dilemma for the moon-buggies. They were sure to have wet seats driving
through the rushing water. During the driver's meeting, it was
announced that, per the consensus of the competitors, to post-pone the start
time to 11:00am. Upon arrival at 11:00, the rain had not subsided, the
river was still full of small rapids, but that was not going to stop the
competitors. The stock mod and legends classes were off to their first
coarse. A good call was made by the event marshal, Lil' Rich to
post-pone the Pro-mod class until Sunday. The Stock-mod and legends
classes successfully completed four courses on Saturday. |

Sunday proved to be a promising day. Sparse clouds in the sky, the sun
poking through and no rain. The rapid-ridden river had subsided and the
courses were accessible with little difficulty. The spectators were out in
full force. It was amazing the support the spectators provided for all of
the competitors. The Stock-mod and Legends class ran their courses.
The Pro-mod class ran six courses. The terrain proved to be its own
obstacle. With wet rocks and plenty of mud, traction was a serious issue
for all of the competitors. The roll-overs were kept down to a minimum.

Team Purple had its share of engine difficulties. Ron Schneider gave
coarse A-3 a run for its money. What appeared to be a horseshoe
shaped coarse, proved to have a lot of bite. Ron navigated his buggy down
the first part of the obstacle, front burned the buggy into position for the
exit obstacle. This obstacle was a straight up vertical climb with a muddy
bottom. Ron and Melanie stacked rocks at the bottom to assist in the
climb. Unfortunately, the buggy threw out all of the rocks, the buggy just
couldn't get enough traction in the wet, slippery terrain. The front tire
finally caught traction as the buggy sat straight up on it's rear tires.
Ron put the buggy in reverse anticipating that the vehicle would reverse and the
front end would drop back down. The engine decided not to cooperate,
sending Ron and the buggy end over end. From there, the buggy went into a
barrel roll. As the buggy gained speed, Melanie, R J Brown and another
gentleman grabbed the spotter strap, holding on for dear life. Melanie let
go of the strap as it attempted to launch her and grabbed R J, who was still
holding on. The buggy stopped 8" from rolling down a rocky canyon wall.
Team Purple and all of those who assisted in the vehicle recovery are all fine. Thanks again...all of you who assisted are absolutely wonderful people.
