Off Road Expo: Pomona Fairplex Oct. 2006Hands down
this was the most spectator friendly event of the year! UROC is
introducing a new twist to rock crawling. They call it Rockcross.
It encompasses the best parts of rock crawling, rock racing, desert racing
and drag racing. The crowd formed around the arena twenty minutes
before an engine even fired all six times we ran on Saturday and Sunday.
It was amazing to see the interest. There were people everywhere
intently watching as we raced over the obstacles even though this was just
exhibition racing.
Two vehicles patiently wait for the green flag to drop to see who will
cross the finish line first. The drivers are itching to throw down and
show the crowd what they're made of. The engines roar, the tires spin
and the crowd goes wild! Each vehicle had to complete three laps, the
winner progresses to the next heat/motto. This continues until two
men/vehicles are remaining. Nerfing is permitted, as well as pushing
and shoving...as long as it's done in a sportsmanlike manner.
Friday was our media day. Channel 5 and 7 came out to see what
Rockcross was all about. Gayle Anderson was there from 8 until 11
covering the Rockcross, motorcycles and RC cars. Ron definitely put on
a good show for the camera, appearing several times during the live
coverage. On Saturday we were in the first motto with Brad Lovell.
His V8 against our V6. Ron's strategy...beat him! On the first
lap Ron was ahead by four car lengths. He came over the last rock
obstacle with so much speed he launched over the pinnacle and drove the
front end into the pavement. Needless to say, when the buggy ceased
motion, she was on her lid. Ron suffered no personal damage, but that
could not be said for Nemesis. Her front end was crippled. Ron
got Nemesis back to the pits and started wrenching, welding, repairing the
damage.
On Sunday we had Nemesis back together...at least enough to run.
She had suffered enough after destroying a portal gear, shearing the mount
for the upper control arm, blowing a shock, and the driveline. She was
not a happy car. However, she made a good showing on Sunday and the
crowd loved it! We had trail repaired the carrier barring and it gave
way with a vengeance! We crippled Nemesis back to the pits, loaded her
and enjoyed the rest of the day. With some modifications, Nemesis will
definitely be competitive in the Rockcross arena.
